A troll by any other name....
Answer: An internet 'troll' is an abusive or obnoxious user who uses shock value to promote arguments and disharmony in online communities.
Named after the wicked troll creatures of children's tales, an internet troll is someone who stirs up drama and abuses their online anonymity by purposely sowing hatred, bigotry, racism, mysogyny, or just simple bickering between others. Trolls like a big audience, so they frequent blog sites, news sites, discussion forums, and game chat. Trolls thrive in any environment where they are allowed to make public comments.
That definition is provided by About.com. But still, it doesn't show just what kind of damage a troll can do. We've all seen the new stories about cyber bullying and the horrific results that can occur from it. Big companies don't care about policing them as the trolls are traffic on the site which promotes more dollars in their pockets. They only step in when something terrible happens and the media reports it. "Oh, we're terribly sorry that happened. Gosh, we do everything we can to prevent it" is they're usual response.
Here, let me give you an example..
James Mitchell is a known troll in the subscription poker community. He goes by the player names otr420, trippinout and several others. On FaceBook you never can tell where he will strike from as he has multiple accounts. James is a particularly bad kind of troll as he goes as far as threatening peoples lives, identity theft, slander, libel, the bad stuff. He has left a trail of victims in his wake since I first became aware of him in 2011. And yes, I was one of his victims. My crime? Not letting him on the air to rant about a poker site.
Most trolls just stir up the pot to see the interaction of other players. In the case of online poker it's harassing players about their playing skills, constant bragging about how great they are, calling folks donks and such. Occasionally however you get a troll like James. Nasty, disparaging personal remarks aimed to hurt people and try to convince others his victim is a horrible human being.
How does he do this? FaceBook is a wonderful place but it also has it's dark side. It's very easy to create as many accounts as you want as long as you have different email addresses. Set up an account, steal pics off of an unsuspecting persons account and start harassing away.
Imagine waking up one morning, logging in, and finding messages from friends seeing your picture asking why you were going by another name and calling somebody a whore or pedophile. And you weren't even his intended target! Just an innocent victim along the way.
Next he sends out page invites to either his other troll friends or strangers. How often do you except friend invitations from folks that have a common interest, hmmmm? Now that he has his account he grabs a picture of his victim and writes horrific lies about the victim and shares them across his friends pages. WAMMO! Instant assault on a totally unsuspecting victim.
Why do trolls do this? Maybe it's poor self image, or they have absolutely no life.... Most trolls are weak-minded individuals that make up stories about what they have accomplished or done to make them selves look good. Or maybe it's because they they have no power over their own lives so they try to take power over someone else's .... Hell, they could be just plain out pshyco as we've seen in recent news reports.
What can you do about it? Well, other than building a wall around your facebook page and blocking the trolls chat on tables and chat boards, not much. You can turn on all your privacy settings to stop the troll from attacking you directly but that doesn't do anything about posts placed on other pages. In the case of FaceBook the support on this issue is pathetic. Automated letters that provide no concrete results. The amount of reports about trolls doesn't seem to have much effect either. I know of 8 individuals who have reported James Mitchell to FaceBook and none of them have received anything other than automated responses and yet James just keeps on targeting unsuspecting people with his hate filled attacks.
That's why I wrote this essay. To make you aware of what's out there and one particularly bad troll to avoid. FB has done nothing about it. Not to be picking on FB alone, the other sites that he stalks on haven't done much either. I guess pursuit of the mighty dollar is more important....
